Book Bytes

The New York Times published an article yesterday regarding the relatively new facet of book publishing that is creating a new market for book designers. Online book publishing at sites like Blurb.com or Lulu.com, allow anyone who can operate a mouse, a license to create a simple book in an edition as small as one. What people are newly discovering however, is how the value of a skilled book designer far outweighs the costs in many cases, so it is providing a niche market for professional designers of books. I see the seeds of a great marketing opportunity here folks! Not only that; you can create a very nice capability book for a client or even a portfolio for yourself at one of these online book publishers. Read the entire NYT article at the "Book Bytes" link in the Resources column at right.

Making it Real

Welcome to the water cooler. I hope everyone is refreshed from Spring break and ready for their last quarter of design school. Spring quarter is a time for new starts and fresh beginnings. And it is our first quarter in our brand new classrooms with all new furniture and equipment. It doesn't get any better! It is also time for each of you to acquire a 'for real' freelance assignment where your design skills will be given the road test. In the weeks to come, I will continue to add resources and links to assist you with your job searching and client service, and I encourage you to review them and to stop in frequently for more refreshments. Please add your own comments when you have something to share or email me links and I will gladly post them. This is a community forum and when everyone participates, we are all enriched. So I wish all of you a great fresh start on your new design careers and daffodils and cherry blossoms to all!
